Can you use CBD when you’re nursing? Being pregnant, giving birth, and breastfeeding all come with their own ups and downs. Some women love these early stages of their baby’s life. Whereas, others experience significant pain and discomfort along the way. Although breastfeeding is very common all over the world, not all women go this route. Surprisingly, though, in America, roughly 81 percent of mothers breastfeed their babies at birth. However, as a baby gets to be six months old and one-year-old, the percentage of breastfeeding drops down. Breastfeeding has its benefits, but it also has side effects.
To combat these side effects and other health struggles, some women consume cannabinoids like CBD. Using CBD when you’re nursing has its positives and negatives. Unfortunately, little research has been conducted on the link between CBD and breastfeeding so far. What benefits can come from consuming CBD when you’re nursing? Alternatively, what risks can occur from consuming this medicine while breastfeeding?
Inadequate Research on the Usage of CBD While Breastfeeding
Unfortunately, a lot still remains unknown regarding the link between cannabis and CBD usage and lactation. There is also little to no research regarding how CBD may impact a baby during nursing. Instead, so far, some research has been released regarding the link between THC usage and breastfeeding. Despite limited research on THC usage while breastfeeding, numerous physicians do not recommend consuming cannabis at all during this time.
Furthermore, some interesting findings were discovered from preliminary studies. According to HelloMD, the following statement was released about these findings: “Preliminary studies have shown that CBD has had no effect on developing embryos, however this study was done on mice.” CBD during pre and post-natal has been shown to have potential benefits for mothers. The next step is to conduct a similar study on human subjects.
CBD—Safe and Non-toxic Cannabinoid that May Help Lactating Mothers
Unlike THC, CBD has been deemed as a safe substance by the World Health Organization. This has led to countless people consuming CBD over THC including mothers and soon-to-be mothers. Sadly, the risks and complications that could occur from THC and CBD exposure to babies is still unknown. This is mostly due to the federal illegality of cannabis in America.
Since so much remains a mystery, most doctors recommend mothers and breastfeeding mothers to refrain from consuming cannabis completely. However, other doctors may suggest consuming CBD when you’re nursing over taking other chemically-based drugs. This way, CBD can naturally help mothers by delivering different medicinal or therapeutic benefits.
Potential Benefits of Consuming CBD When You’re Nursing
Although breastfeeding is very beneficial for newborns, it can cause some problems for mothers. Physician Zarya Rubin described breastfeeding’s benefits via this statement: “Breastfeeding also has many health benefits for mom that we often don’t hear about. Moms who breastfeed have a lower incidence of breast cancer, heart disease, diabetes, ovarian cancer, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, and more.”
Also, a mother’s body can go through various changes after giving birth. These changes can arise before or after breastfeeding. However, a handful of breastfeeding side effects include but are not limited to the following:
Weight changes, nipple pain and discomfort, tingly breast sensations (which can result in anxiety or stress), changes in breastmilk, potential infections, anxiety, insomnia, and/or skin changes
Can You Use CBD When You’re Nursing?
So, how can you benefit from using CBD when you’re nursing? For one, CBD’s anti-anxiety and analgesic properties can be very useful. CBD also works as a sleep aid, which can help you combat insomnia. This cannabinoid can even deliver moisture to the skin thus helping treat different skin issues. Then, CBD can deliver physical relaxation and calming effects to individuals. This can help both nursing mothers and those around them.
Overall, not enough research has been conducted on the link between consuming cannabinoids while breastfeeding. Therefore, it is recommended to speak with your doctor before using CBD when you’re nursing. Would you give CBD a try during the breastfeeding stage of your baby’s life? Or, would you wait until more research comes out? Let us know what you would do in the comments below!
